A short history of the state of man, with regard to religion and morals; from the beginning of the world to the Reformation. Drawn from scripture, and adapted, in easy, familiar diction, to the capacities of the younger sort; with useful observations: To which are subjoined several Examples of Wickedness punish'd, and Virtue rewarded, as set forth in Holy Writ. The Design of the Whole, being to give Youth such a previous View of Sacred History, and the Principles of the Christian Religion, as may qualify them for hearing Sermons, and reading pious Books to full Advantage; and, at the same Time, to impress on their tender Minds an affecting Sense of God, and the great Mercy of Redemption by Christ. Mr. Poole begs to acquaint the nobility, gentry, and others, that from the liberal and extensive encouragement which he has experienced in the present undertaking, and from the promise of future patronage and support, he designs publishing a Second number of views of the principal seats in the vicinity of Reading; which he trusts will be found not unworthy the attention of all those who may be in possession of this, his first number. Of the merits of the present work, it does not become him to say any thing. It is before the public:-let it speak for itself. But it is his wish; nay-he conceives it his duty, to offer some apology for the protracted delays which this work has unavoidably experienced. He has been the victim of ill-health during the greater part of the time he has been engaged in this work; which, together with other trivial circumstances, has impeded its publication thus long. He can only say, it is not probable that the like causes can ever again occur; and he hopes, upon consideration, this will be admitted as a sufficient apology. Mr. P. likewise begs to acquaint the subscribers to the present work, and the public in general, that he is now engaged in engraving an extensive and picturesque view of the town of Reading, taken from Red-Lane Hill, from a drawing by Mr. Robinson, whose abilities as an artist are too well known to need the recommendation of encomium. - The Drawing may be inspected at Messrs. Snare and Co's. Minster-Street, Reading; where books are opened for the reception of subscribers' names. The size of the Drawing is 21 inches by 151/2 inches. Price 10s. 6d. No money is required till the Print is ready for delivery. Reading, Dec. 8, 1798.
